Cars–curse or craze?Johnny Watson, 30It is easy to criticize cars – they cause pollutio

Cars–curse or craze?

Johnny Watson, 30

It is easy to criticize cars – they cause pollution and accidents, and so on. But what are alternatives? Nobody wants to travel in a slow, smelly old bus when you can relax in the comfort of your own car. In most countries, the public transport system is inadequate, expensive and inefficient – and anyway, cities today are designed to meet drivers’ needs, with fast roads and car parks everywhere. The car industry also provides thousands of jobs. Roads are getting safer and more efficient every year, and cars are causing less pollution because of lead-free petrol and other technological improvement. What’s the problem?

Amanda Rees, 33

I am much happier now that I don’t have my car. I used to spend an hour stuck in a traffic jam each morning and that made me angry and irritable for the rest of the day. I was so stressed! The worst thing about cars, though, is the number of accidents. Did you know that somebody dies in a road accident in Britain every two and a half hours? Another thing I hate is the way that road building is destroying the countryside. Finally, I would love to live without that constant traffic noise coming through the window. In fact, I think it’s the noise that bothers me most.

1、What does Johnny think of cars? ()

A、They cause pollution and accidents

B、They are slow and smelly

C、They are comfortable

2、Which is not the reason why Johnny supports cars?()

A、The public transport system in most countries is not good enough

B、Road building is destroying the countryside

C、Roads are much safer and more efficient now

3、Did Amanda use to have a car?()

A、Yes, she did

B、No, she didn’t

C、It doesn’t mention

4、What bothers Amanda most?()

A、What bothers Amanda most

B、The destroying of the countryside

C、The constant traffic noise

5、How serious is the road accident in Britain?()

A、Someone dies every 2 hours

B、Someone dies every 2.5 hours

C、Someone dies every 0.5 hours

From:Simon Harris

Dear Brett,

Welcome back to St.Swithen’s.I look forward to hearing about your adventures in the US.

I’m writing because there have been a lot of changes since you went away, and you need to know about them before you can start work.

The main change is that we have had a new computer system installed. You will need to be trained in using the system before you can see any patients! I’ve arranged for you to have a training session at 10 o’clock on Monday with our IT consultant, Gerry. He’s a really nice guy.

It’s especially important that you can use the patient records system. We’ve had a few teething problems, and it seems complicated at first;but when you get used to it, you’ll find it really helpful. For example, it’s much quicker than the old system.Remember you used to wait ages before the information came up on the screen? Well, now it’s very quick.

You will also need to be familiar with the appointment booking system, so you can see who your next patient is.The new program makes it impossible to double-book a patient, so we shouldn’t get as many complaints as we used to.

As well as the computer system, we’ve also installed a new electronic security door. You will need a special card from reception and it will need replacing every two months.I’m afraid we made Bill redundant. It’s a shame;I used to enjoy talking to him every morning.

Well, I hope you like the improvements. Most people find that it makes their work easier and faster. There is one downside though;the atmosphere has become less personal.I used to talk to everyone a lot, but now we communicate by email most of the time.I even email people who work in the same room as me!

Well, see you on Monday, Brett.Nice to have you back.

Best wishes,

Simon

第11题
One of my favorite places when I lived in Tokyo was the sushi bar in my neighborhood.
I'd take a seat, and the chef would prepare fish fresh from the market in central Tokyo. I liked sushi before I moved to Japan; now I love it.

I'm hardly alone, which is bad news for the world's oceans. Partly because more and more sushi is demanded, we're fast fishing out our seas. Some researchers estimate that if we don't change the way we harvest the oceans, all the commercial fisheries (捕鱼业) in the world could disappear as early as 2048. That could mean no more fish to buy in your local supermarket.

Fortunately, scientists are looking for ways to fish sustainably (可持续地). One method is a quota system that sets a limited amount to every fisherman or corporation who wants a share of the total catch for certain sea area. These catch shares get rid of the possibility to over fish.A recent study in Science found that the system can prevent fishery from dying and even make it better over time. "It's truly a win-win situation," says Steven Gaines, a marine biologist at the University of California at Santa Barbara and one of the study's co-authors.

Consumers also can help save the seas through the fish they buy. California's Monterey Bay Aquarium Institute is coming out with pocket guides to sustainable sushi. The researchers base their ratings on the health of a wild fish's population as well as the impacts of fish-farming operations. Oysters, for example, grow fast and can be farmed sustainably, but salmon can't. The researchers also take fishing practices into consideration: catching big-eye tuna (金枪鱼) can cause its nearby fish to die, which certainly no one wants to see. It is hoped that, by making the right choice, consumers can encourage businesses to fish in a more sustainable way.

1、The author loved _____ when he lived in Tokyo.

A、playing football

B、eating sea food

C、singing and dancing

D、reading newspapers

2、If we continue to fish in this way, ______.

A、the fisheries could make a lot of money

B、more and more sushi would be demanded

C、there could be no fish in the oceans

D、the supermarkets could disappear

3、The "quota system" is a system which ______.

A、sets a limited amount to fishermen or companies

B、enables everyone to fish as much as possible

C、prevents fishery from getting better over time

D、is not a way to guarantee sustainable fishing

4、According to the last paragraph, the researchers base their ratings on _____ aspects.

A、one

B、two

C、three

D、four

5、The example of catching big-eye tuna is to prove that _____.

A、the quota system is a win-win situation

B、the pocket guides are helpful to sustainable sushi

C、the health of a wild fish's population is important

D、the researchers base the ratings on fishing practice
